{"id":7811,"date":"2019-10-31T10:36:21","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T10:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oilnewskenya.com\/?p=7811"},"modified":"2019-10-31T10:36:31","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T10:36:31","slug":"kenyas-mobile-tech-revolution-a-new-dawn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oilnewskenya.com\/index.php\/kenyas-mobile-tech-revolution-a-new-dawn\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya\u2019s Mobile Tech Revolution \u2013 A New Dawn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mobile revolution has\nimmensely transformed the lives of Kenyans, both communication-wise and also in\nterms of simplifying financial access. The phone-based money system popularly\nknown as M-PESA introduced in 2007 by Kenya\u2019s biggest mobile provider,\nSafaricom has made the exchange and transfer of money safe and easier. Being\nrelatively more convenient than banking, mobile technology is accessible 24\nhours a day, and totally eliminates the cumbersome processes of having to go\nthrough the bank to complete transactions. Smaller transactions such as\nshopping and paying for miscellaneous utilities are available at the palm of\nyour hand. For example, you can easily transfer money from your M-PESA account\nto Betway, the same way you can withdraw winnings from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betway.co.ke\">https:\/\/www.betway.co.ke<\/a>\nstraight to your mobile phone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an estimated\npopulation of 50 million, 90 percent of Kenyans are mobile users, with over 82\npercent using M-PESA services regularly. The widely embraced system has caused\nbanks and other financial institutions to rethink their positions, with\nbank-integrated mobile systems taking shape. Inevitably, banks were losing out\nmajorly due to the constantly rising mobile technology, as more and more people\nopted to use the shorter route. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And just when these banks\nwere looking for ways to counter mobile money transfer, other operators like\nAirtel (formerly Zain) and <a href=\"https:\/\/telkom.co.za\/\">Telkom<\/a>\ngot onboard. The main reason these two operators decided to follow Safaricom\u2019s\nM-PESA was due to the fact that they were losing their newly acquired clients\nat an alarming rate, and Safaricom had found an effective way to catch new\ncustomers. The battle was no longer between Safaricom and banks any more, but\nbetween all stakeholders involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The\nline had already been drawn<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mobile technology was the\nway to go, what remained was to pick up the pieces and make what was already\nthere better. It was a real challenge, but the competition between parties\ninvolved was welcome as it hastened new developments, and seemed to make things\neasier \u2013 and cheaper for customers. The banking sector was losing out big time,\nbut it was never at risk of closing down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">M-PESA had its\nlimitations, for example, huge transactions could not be done through mobile\nphones, but only through banks. It is adequate to say that regardless of the\nfew limitations associated with mobile technology, it keeps serving as the most\nconvenient way of handling payments, including public utilities and shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Good\nenvironment for new technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Kenya ranks among\nthe top African countries to embrace software technology, with a host of\nground-breaking innovations coming up. The support from the ministry, and a\ngood infrastructure for development has resulted in more scholars pushing for\nnew technological innovations geared towards improving mobile technology for\nbetter lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact that the\ngovernment has given its people a free hand has allowed the sector to flourish\nbig time, unlike in other African countries where regulations are too rigid to\nallow for any new development. A good breeding space has been the<a href=\"https:\/\/ihub.co.ke\/\"> iHub<\/a>, a center of\ninnovation where research is the order of the day. Giant tech companies such as\nGoogle and Microsoft have been working closely with young innovators through\nworks of research to identify and nurture new innovations. International\ninvestors have also taken interest, with the number of those willing to fund\nnew projects constantly on the rise.
