A rift has emerged between Kenya\nand Somalia over an alleged licensing round by the horn of Africa country in\nwhich Nairobi accuses its neighbor of licensing some contentious blocks in the\nIndian Ocean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Kenya the London\nauction that took place on the 7th<\/sup> February 2019 and which was led\nby the Petroleum Minister Abdirashid Mohamed involved auctioning of oil and gas\nblocks in Kenya\u2019s maritime territorial area that borders Somalia<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Already the Kenyan government has summoned its Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Somalia Amb. Lt. General (Rtd) Lucas Tumbo to Nairobi as well as sent a protest (demarche to Ambassador of Somalia in Nairobi. According to the Principal Secretary in Kenya\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Macharia Kamau the licensing in a heavily worded statement the licensing round was an \u201cunparalleled affront and illegal grab at the resources of Kenya\u2026 and tantamount to an act of aggression against the people of Kenya and its resources.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked by the BBC ahead of the conference on the auction rumors Abdirashid denied plans to auction any oil blocks during the Spectrum sponsored oil and gas conference terming the event an opportunity to reveal details of the 2D seismic acquisition<\/a> exercise and the legal and regulatory framework. Notably the 2D seismic facilitated by Soma Oil & Gas limited was headed by the country’s current Prime Minister <\/a>ahead of his appointment to Government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSomalia regrets a statement by\nKenya alleging that the Government of Somalia is \u201cproffering to bid\u201d any blocks\nin Kenya\u2019s potential maritime zones to external bidders,\u201d said Somalia\u2019s\nforeign affairs minister Ahmed Isse Awad in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somalia has also condemned the expulsion\nof its ambassador from Nairobi terming it a \u2018hasty decision\u2019 and \u2018without\nproper consultation.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back home the government had also\nseen opposition ahead of the London conference with the senate terming the\nconference illegal. The Upper House\u2019s national resource committee in a\nstatement termed the summit unconstitutional and against the law warning that\nany auction could have \u201cextremely serious consequences\u201d given the country lacks\na petroleum law and regulations according to Garowe Online news site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAccording to the article 44 of\nthe constitution which clarifies the scheme of the resource sharing is still\nuncompleted and besides there is a dispute between the regional states and the\ncentral Government,\u201d read the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In London protesters accused the\ngovernment of trying to illegally sell offshore oil exploration zones with some\nprotesters even accusing Spectrum of trying to ignite another resource related\nconflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
