Kenya\u2019s Block 9 operator Africa Oil has until June 2018 to undertake engineering and well design for reevaluation and testing of Bogal-1 well over eight years after the well was plugged and abandoned by then operator CNOOC citing extensive fracture network proven by the abundant fluid losses during drilling and the Formation Micro Imaging (FMI) log.<\/p>\n

According to CNOOC the preliminary testing carried out on two potential gas pay zones showed only minimal flow of gas from each zone leading to the plugging and abandonment decision pending further analysis of the test results to determine the feasibility of an additional testing program, which would include fracture and acid stimulation, due to potential wellbore damage during drilling.<\/p>\n

Initial results from one of Kenya\u2019s deepest onshore wells reaching a total depth of 5085 meters indicated multiple gas pay zones totaling approximately 91 metres in Lower Cretaceous sandstones. Bogal 1 was also the first gas discovery in the block\u00a0was seen as an important step in proving the presence of hydrocarbons in the block and was proceeded by an even larger discovery at the Sala-1 well<\/a> which intercepted gas within three distinct zones\u00a0of interest over a 1000-meter gross interval.<\/p>\n

Other than the reevaluation of the Bogal 1 well Africa oil has been tasked with undertaking a gas development and commercialization study in the block.<\/p>\n

Africa Oil which is currently serving an eighteen month extension to the second additional period set to expire in June 2018 is also required to reprocess 300 line kilometers of 2D seismic data acquired over the Kaisut sub-basin in the northwestern portion of the block\u00a0, conduct geological and geophysical studies and reevaluation of the identified prospects in the block.<\/p>\n
