{"id":245,"date":"2013-12-14T10:22:32","date_gmt":"2013-12-14T10:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oilnewskenya.com\/?p=245"},"modified":"2015-09-02T20:09:43","modified_gmt":"2015-09-02T20:09:43","slug":"norway-oil-fund-under-lawmaker-pressure-to-buy-more-in-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oilnewskenya.com\/index.php\/norway-oil-fund-under-lawmaker-pressure-to-buy-more-in-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Norway Oil Fund Under Lawmaker Pressure to Buy More in Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[twitter-follow screen_name=&#8217;oilnewskenya&#8217;]<\/p>\n<p>Norway\u2019s Christian Democrats, a key support party for the minority government, called on the nation\u2019s sovereign wealth fund to steer more of its $810 billion in assets into\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.bloomberg.com\/africa\/\">Africa<\/a>\u00a0to reap better returns.<\/p>\n<p>The party wants to set aside 10 billion kroner ($1.6 billion) of the fund\u2019s cash for African purchases as a \u201cstarting point\u201d for a debate on how much should be invested there, Knut Arild Hareide, leader of the Christian Democrats, said in a Dec. 6 interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we make these investments in Africa, it\u2019s good for those countries,\u201d Hareide said. \u201cIt has also been better for us to invest in Africa over the last years than in Europe,\u201d where a recession has hurt returns, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Norway\u2019s wealth fund, which got its first capital infusion in 1996 to invest the country\u2019s oil wealth outside its borders, is in the midst of a shift in strategy to capture more global growth. It\u2019s moving asset allocation away from Europe as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.bloomberg.com\/emerging-markets\/\">emerging markets<\/a>\u00a0in Asia and South America gain a bigger share of global output.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of September, the fund held 9.6 percent of its stock portfolio in emerging market countries, including 0.6 percent in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The FTSE\/JSE Africa All-Share Index, the benchmark index in Johannesburg, has risen 350 percent over the past 10 years, compared with 40 percent for the Stoxx Europe 600 Index.<\/p>\n<h2>White Paper<\/h2>\n<p>Hareide\u2019s push to increase investments in Africa comes as the new government prepares its first annual white paper on the fund for parliament.
