{"id":1872,"date":"2014-10-07T09:24:10","date_gmt":"2014-10-07T08:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oilnewskenya.com\/?p=1872"},"modified":"2015-09-07T13:33:39","modified_gmt":"2015-09-07T13:33:39","slug":"cairn-energy-far-announce-oil-discovery-senegal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oilnewskenya.com\/index.php\/cairn-energy-far-announce-oil-discovery-senegal\/","title":{"rendered":"Cairn Energy, FAR announce oil discovery Senegal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cairn\u00a0together with its joint venture partners FAR ConocoPhillips 35% and Petrosen have announced\u00a0that the\u00a0FAN-1\u00a0exploration well,\u00a0offshore Senegal, has discovered oil.<\/p>\n<p>The well,\u00a0located\u00a0in 1,427 metres\u00a0water depth\u00a0and\u00a0approximately 100 kilometres\u00a0offshore in\u00a0the\u00a0Sangomar\u00a0Deep block reached\u00a0a Target Depth of 4,927\u00a0m and was targeting multiple stacked deepwater fans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preliminary analysis indicates:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>29m of net oil bearing reservoir in Cretaceous sandstones<\/li>\n<li>No water contact was encountered in a gross oil bearing interval of more than 500m<\/li>\n<li>Distinct oils types ranging from 28\u00b0 API up to 41\u00b0 API \u00a0indicated so far from a number of oil samples recovered to surface<\/li>\n<li>Initial gross STOIIP estimates for the FAN-1 well range from P90, 250 mmbbls, P50, 950 mmbbls to P10, 2,500 mmbbls and are broadly in line with pre-drill STOIIP estimates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;The oil discovered in the FAN-1 prospect is an important event for Senegal and the Joint Venture.\u00a0We have encountered a very substantial oil bearing interval which may have significant potential as a standalone discovery. Furthermore, this result materially upgrades the prospectivity of the block with a proven petroleum system and a number of deep fan and shelf prospects established,\u201d says Cairn Energy CEO Simon Thomson.<\/p>\n<p>The companies however reiterate that as stated prior to the commencement of operations there are no plans for immediate well testing.<\/p>\n<p>Further evaluation will now be required\u00a0to calibrate the well with\u00a0the\u00a0existing 3D\u00a0seismic\u00a0in order\u00a0to\u00a0determine future plans and optimal\u00a0follow up\u00a0locations to determine the extent of the discovered resource.<\/p>\n<p>Once operations are completed on the FAN-1 well, the rig will move to complete the second well, SNE-1 where the top hole has been drilled pending re-entry. This\u00a0Shelf Edge Prospect targeting a dual objective in 1,100m water depth\u00a0is in the Sangomar Deep block.<\/p>\n<p>The FAN-1 well was drilled using the semi-submersible drilling unit &#8220;Cajun Express&#8221;.\u00a0 It is the third well in Cairn&#8217;s North West Africa programme and first in Senegal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFAR looks forward to working with the Government of Senegal and our joint venture partners in determining follow up appraisal and exploration drilling plans.
