Afren plans to drill two wells in 2015 after completing an airborne gravity and magnetic survey and additional 2D seismic to help define closures across the Mombasa High.<\/p>\n
The wells are set to be drilled in blocks L17 and L18 offshore south-east Kenya covers an area of approximately 4,881 km2 and situated in water depths varying from a few feet along the shoreline to up to around 2,625 ft in the Pemba Channel.<\/p>\n
Initial studies in the area shows several potential source rocks for the Tertiary and Cretaceous plays in the southern areas of the basin including the Permo-Triassic Karoo interval, the Middle Jurassic and high Total Organic Carbon (TOCs) are recorded within the Eocene section in the Pemba-5 well.<\/p>\n
In Blocks L17 & L18 where Afren has 100% interest and is the operator 1,207 km 2D marine seismic and 474 km 2D shallow water and transition zone seismic has been completed. A 1,000 km2 3D seismic and 120 km 2D onshore seismic has also been completed.<\/p>\n
In block 1 where Afren has 80 percent interest and is the operator a 696 km airborne high resolution gravity and magnetic survey has been completed as well\u00a0 as 1,900 km 2D seismic.<\/p>\n
A planned exploration well is also set for late 2014 in the block.<\/p>\n
